The Gut Check: The Not-So-Definitive Guide To Setting Resolutions

The Gut Check:
Your pulse on intuition, strategy, and decisive leadership.

Hi Reader,

I bet you're feeling the pressure. It's time. The clock is ticking...

What is your new year's resolution?

This time of year, many of us are thinking about resolutions. What are we taking with us from this past year? What will we toss aside to make space for something new?

I can’t tell you the number of goal setting, reflective, resolute posts I’ve seen in my LinkedIn and Instagram feeds.

Some feel like pressure, some feel soft and kind. I hope you read this newsletter as the latter: an invitation to do, or don’t.

Is It Time To Set A Resolution?

Yes, if it feels good to reflect and resolve now, sure, try to set new goals.

And, what really is the end of the year? Why do we need to change now?

Part of the urge to resolve is the collective reflection. We have the community of a whole group of people - on social media and in our in-person lives - who are also considering their renewed selves.

When To Set Your Resolutions

Setting and revisiting goals, behaviors and habits helps us maintain curiosity and interest in our work and our lives.

How often do you need to spark curiosity and interest to regain focus?

I challenge you to consider if it feels right to change more or less frequently than once a year.

Some of my clients reset their goals every quarter. Others are on a six-month cadence. I have been working a six-week sprint and keeping my sight on an 18-month North Star.

Your rhythm may not be my rhythm. And our rhythms can evolve.

Your Resolution Gut Check

If January does feel like an appropriate time to reflect and resolve to change, consider some prompts from the VIEW Framework:

  • Can you get more clear on your Value?
How might 2026 be a year of clarity about what brings you energy? How you build trust?
  • Might you tap into your sources of Insight?
Who can you connect with that provides informed and insightful perspective? Is there a perspective you can leave behind that doesn’t serve where you’re heading? What does your inner trusted advisor (your intuition) have to say?
  • Will you explore your Empowerment?
Can you strengthen your intuition or your body? How might you connect, advocate and expand your influence? Where do you find your drive?
  • Whose Wisdom will you channel in the new year? Perhaps your own?
What have you learned through your own experience in the past year? How can you frame the story to help provide guidance in the future?

The Gut Check: Your pulse on intuition, strategy, and decisive leadership. Hi Reader, Some of my most formative professional experiences were working on consulting engagements known as Value Based Deals. These programs were intended to provide consulting services that realized actual, tangible, quantifiable benefits for clients (think beaucoup bucks CapEx and OpEx savings for Fortune 100 companies) without upfront payment. This was particularly appealing during the economic downturn in 2008...

The Gut Check: Your pulse on intuition, strategy, and decisive leadership. Hi Reader, I get asked all the time what it actually means to trust your gut. It’s one of those phrases everyone nods at. Trusting your gut is having the confidence to act on what your intuition is telling you. What I Mean When I Say...
