Not my circus, not my monkeys (except when it is)

The Gut Check:
Your pulse on intuition, strategy, and decisive leadership.

Hi Reader,

I have a mantra I return to every time I'm in a tough situation.

Circle of Influence. Circle of Control.

A mentor taught it to me years ago, and I've passed it along to probably every mentee and direct report I've ever had: care only about what you can influence and control. The rest isn't worth your time.

I even picked up a Polish idiom along the way that's become my companion mantra:

Nie mój cyrk, nie moje małpy.
Not my circus, not my monkeys.

But here's what I've learned after years of working with leaders.

Sometimes you care about the monkeys.

And when you do — when something is genuinely important to you but feels out of reach — the answer isn't to stop caring. It's to get clear on where your attention actually creates impact.

If you want to go deeper on the Control/Influence framework, I wrote about it here.

The question Q2 is asking you right now

Most leaders I talk to are walking into the next quarter with the targets, the team, and more data than they know what to do with.

What they're missing is a clear answer to the question that actually drives results:

Where does my attention create the greatest impact right now?

That's not a strategic planning question. It's a clarity question. And it's one most leaders never carve out time to answer until the quarter is already halfway gone.

Let's answer it together on April 1st

The Gut Check: Your pulse on intuition, strategy, and decisive leadership. Hi Reader, Some of my most formative professional experiences were working on consulting engagements known as Value Based Deals. These programs were intended to provide consulting services that realized actual, tangible, quantifiable benefits for clients (think beaucoup bucks CapEx and OpEx savings for Fortune 100 companies) without upfront payment. This was particularly appealing during the economic downturn in 2008...

The Gut Check: Your pulse on intuition, strategy, and decisive leadership. Hi Reader, I get asked all the time what it actually means to trust your gut. It’s one of those phrases everyone nods at. Trusting your gut is having the confidence to act on what your intuition is telling you. What I Mean When I Say...
